MARPOL Annex VI

B2. Marine Engineering

Definition

Air pollution and energy-efficiency annex.

MARPOL Annex VI controls air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from ships. It caps fuel sulphur at 0.50 percent globally and 0.10 percent in emission control areas, sets NOx Tier I, II, and III limits by engine build date and operating area, and limits ozone-depleting substances and shipboard incineration. The energy-efficiency chapter (Chapter 4) carries the EEDI for new ships, the EEXI for existing ships, and the operational Carbon Intensity Indicator with its annual rating. Compliance is shown by the IAPP and IEE certificates and verified by port state control.
