Notice to mariners

C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical management

Definition

NM, updates to nautical charts and publications.

Notices to Mariners are the official corrections that keep nautical charts and publications up to date, issued weekly by national hydrographic offices such as the UK Hydrographic Office. They cover changes to depths, lights, buoyage, wrecks, and traffic routing, plus temporary and preliminary (T and P) notices. SOLAS Chapter V Regulation 27 requires charts and publications to be adequate and up to date for the intended voyage. The navigating officer applies corrections by hand or through ECDIS updates and logs them in the chart correction log. PSC checks that the largest-scale charts for the passage are corrected.
