Founded by Prince Albert I in 1910.
A museum of marine science in Monaco-Ville, inaugurated 1910 by Prince Albert I, the oceanographer-prince who funded it from his own expeditions. The building rises 85 meters above the sea on the face of the Rock of Monaco and combines an aquarium, oceanographic instruments, and specimens from the prince’s North Atlantic and Mediterranean campaigns. Jacques Cousteau directed it from 1957 to 1988. It is run by the Institut oceanographique he founded.
