Onboard training programme
C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical managementDefinition
Cadet and officer training plan.
An onboard training programme is the structured plan that develops cadets, junior officers, and ratings through documented tasks, the STCW training record book, and supervised competence assessment on the ship. For cadets it ties to the STCW Regulation I/12 and Section A-I/12 simulator and approved-training requirements and the seagoing-service entries needed for a certificate of competency. The company assigns a shipboard training officer, and the programme covers safety familiarization, watchkeeping under supervision, and equipment-specific drills. The ISM Code Element 6 requires the company to identify training needs and provide it. Auditors and flag-state examiners check the training record book and the programme records, since an unsupported sea-service claim can invalidate a certificate.
