Supramax

C1. Commercial shipping, chartering, economics and finance

Definition

Dry bulk segment of about 50,000 to 60,000 dwt.

A geared dry-bulk segment of roughly 50,000 to 60,000 dwt, sitting between Handymax and Panamax, typically fitted with its own cranes so it can work cargo at ports without shore gear. Supramaxes carry grain, minor bulks, steels, and bagged cargoes on a wide route network, which is why the Baltic Supramax Index is a 30 percent component of the dry-bulk BDI. The slightly larger, longer Ultramax is a modern development of the same type.
