Parcel tanker

C1. Commercial shipping, chartering, economics and finance

Definition

Chemical tanker with many segregated tanks.

A parcel tanker is a chemical tanker with many small, individually segregated and separately pumped cargo tanks, built to carry numerous chemical and specialty liquid parcels on one voyage. A large parcel tanker can have 40 or more stainless steel or coated tanks, each with its own pump and line, allowing strict segregation of incompatible cargoes under the IBC Code. It trades like a liner, lifting multiple parcels for different shippers between ports. Stainless steel tanks carry aggressive chemicals; coated tanks carry easy chemicals and clean petroleum products. Stolt, Odfjell, and similar operators run the deep-sea parcel fleet.
