PIANC WG165

C4. Ports, terminals and coastal/marine civil engineering

Definition

Design and maintenance of container terminal pavements.

PIANC WG165 is the Maritime Navigation Commission Working Group report on the design, maintenance, and sustainability of container terminal pavements. It covers the heavy, concentrated, and repetitive wheel loads from straddle carriers, reach stackers, and rubber-tyred gantry cranes, and the choice between concrete block, asphalt, and rigid concrete surfaces for stacking yards and operating lanes. The guidance treats subgrade preparation, drainage, and whole-life maintenance, and the updated scope adds sustainability of pavement materials. Terminal designers use it to size pavement structures against equipment axle loads and container-stacking surcharges.
