US Coast Guard engine rating endorsement.

A Qualified Member of the Engineering Department is a US Coast Guard engine-rating endorsement covering ratings such as oiler, fireman-watertender, and refrigerating engineer. The QMED is recorded on the Merchant Mariner Credential and is the US national counterpart to the STCW Regulation III/4 and III/5 engine-rating grades. The endorsement requires sea service and a Coast Guard examination in the specialty.
