Engine Rating

Engine rating is the term for non-officer engine-room crew: oilers, wipers, motormen, and the able seafarer engine grade. Ratings forming part of an engine-room watch are certificated under STCW Regulation III/4, and the able seafarer engine grade under Regulation III/5. They carry out routine maintenance, machinery rounds, and watch support under the engineer officers. On periodically unattended machinery spaces the engine rating supports day work rather than a continuous watch.
