Marine Engineer Officer
F3. Seafaring Life, Education, Professions and InstitutionsDefinition
STCW-certified engine-room officer.
A marine engineer officer is a certificated engine-room officer holding an STCW Chapter III Certificate of Competency, from the operational-level engineer officer of the watch (Regulation III/1) to the management-level chief engineer (Regulation III/2). The engine department runs the main propulsion plant, generators, boilers, pumps, and the planned maintenance system. Many marine engineers hold IMarEST membership and chartered engineer status ashore. The certificate path mirrors the deck side: cadet, watch officer, then management grades, gated by sea time and examination.
