Quincy Maritime Training

F3. Seafaring Life, Education, Professions and Institutions

Definition

Heritage program at the closed Quincy yard.

Heritage and training activity associated with the former Fore River Shipyard at Quincy, Massachusetts, the major Bethlehem Steel and later General Dynamics yard that closed to large-ship construction in 1986. It survives as shipyard-trades apprenticeship heritage and museum interpretation at the US Naval Shipbuilding Museum in Quincy, home of the preserved heavy cruiser USS Salem; the yard’s legacy is industrial shipbuilding skill, not merchant-officer licensing.
