Refrigerated container leasing

C3. Logistics, freight forwarding and multimodal trade

Definition

Leasing per IICL guidelines.

Refrigerated container leasing is the hire of reefer containers, the insulated, machinery-fitted boxes that hold temperatures from about minus 30 to plus 30 Celsius, from a leasing company to a carrier or shipper rather than buying outright. Leases run as long-term, master, or one-way short-term arrangements, with the lessor and lessee allocating maintenance, repair, and redelivery condition. Redelivery standards and damage assessment follow the IICL (Institute of International Container Lessors) reefer guidelines, which set the gate-inspection criteria and repair responsibility. Reefer leasing lets carriers flex temperature-controlled capacity for seasonal produce and pharmaceutical flows without tying up capital in equipment that idles off-season.
