Reefer container

C3. Logistics, freight forwarding and multimodal trade

Definition

Refrigerated container with integral plant.

A reefer container is an insulated ISO box with an integral refrigeration unit that holds a set-point temperature for perishable or temperature-controlled cargo. It draws three-phase power from ship reefer sockets, terminal reefer racks, or a clip-on genset during road and rail legs. Set points, supply and return air temperatures, and alarms are increasingly logged through IoT reefer monitoring. Atmosphere-controlled variants regulate oxygen and carbon dioxide for fruit that continues to respire in transit.
