Rescue boat drill

C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical management

Definition

SOLAS drill at intervals not exceeding three months.

A rescue boat drill is the monthly exercise under SOLAS Chapter III Regulation 19 in which the rescue boat is launched with its assigned crew and maneuvered in the water. Where launching of every rescue boat each month is impracticable, the interval may be extended but never beyond three months. On ships fitted only with lifeboats that also serve as rescue boats, the lifeboat exercise satisfies this requirement. Crew with enclosed space entry and rescue duties take part in an enclosed space rescue drill at least once every two months. The drill confirms launching appliance readiness, engine starting, and recovery of a person from the water.
