RINA Notation (GREEN PLUS)

D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuels

Definition

Class society environmental notation.

GREEN PLUS is a voluntary class notation issued by RINA, the Italian classification society, that rates a ship’s environmental performance against a goal-based index covering air emissions, water and waste discharges, energy efficiency, and pollution-prevention measures. RINA launched it in 2008. A vessel earns the notation by scoring above a threshold on design solutions, onboard equipment, and operational procedures that go beyond regulatory minimums, such as alternative fuels, high-efficiency propellers, optimized hull form, biodegradable lubricants, and crew environmental training. The index rewards measures that cut fuel consumption and air emissions and lower pollution risk, so the notation signals environmental performance above the IMO and flag-state baseline.
