Definition

English Cinque Port heritage site.

Heritage collections in Rye, East Sussex, an inland town that was once a leading Cinque Port until the harbor silted and the sea retreated roughly two miles. Rye joined the Cinque Ports confederation as an Ancient Town, supplying ships and crews to the medieval Crown in exchange for trading privileges. The Rye Heritage Centre presents the town story, including the Rye Town Model, and the smuggling and shipbuilding history of the Sussex coast.
