Safety management certificate

The SMC, the ISM Code certificate issued to an individual ship confirming the company and its shipboard management operate in line with the approved Safety Management System. It is valid five years with an intermediate verification, and depends on the company holding a matching Document of Compliance for that ship type. Port State Control treats an invalid or missing SMC as a detainable deficiency.
