ISM audit

The verification audit, internal or external, that checks a ship’s and company’s Safety Management System against the ISM Code. External audits by the flag state or its recognized organization lead to issue or renewal of the Document of Compliance and Safety Management Certificate; the company’s own internal audits, required by the Code, find gaps before the external one does. A major non-conformity at an external audit can suspend certification and stop the ship trading.
