Safety officer
C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical managementDefinition
Designated officer for occupational safety on board.
The safety officer is the shipboard officer designated under the ISM Code and flag-state law to manage occupational health and safety: risk assessments, safety committee meetings, permit-to-work systems, and incident investigation. The role is usually held by a deck officer, often the third or second officer, alongside watchkeeping duties. The Maritime Labour Convention and SOLAS reinforce the safety officer’s place in the shipboard safety management system.
