First US National Historic Site, established 1938.
The first National Historic Site in the United States, designated 17 March 1938 on the Salem, Massachusetts, waterfront and run by the National Park Service. It preserves Derby Wharf, the 1819 Custom House where Nathaniel Hawthorne worked, and merchant buildings from Salem’s late-1700s era as a leading American port in the China and East India trade. A full-size replica of the 1797 East Indiaman Friendship is moored at Derby Wharf.
