A museum at Salem, Massachusetts, whose maritime collection traces to the East India Marine Society founded in 1799 by Salem sea captains, making it among the oldest continuously operating museums in the United States. The 1992 merger of the Peabody Museum of Salem and the Essex Institute formed the current institution. Its maritime art and Asian export holdings reflect Salem’s early-1800s China and India trade.
