SDC Sub-Committee

A1. The IMO and the international regulatory framework

Definition

Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction.

The Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction (SDC) is the IMO body responsible for the SOLAS Chapter II-1 subdivision, damage-stability, and construction requirements, load lines, tonnage, and the design aspects of passenger-ship safety and the Polar Code. It reports to the MSC. SDC first met in 2014, combining the work of the former DE, SLF, and parts of other sub-committees under the 2013 restructuring. It develops structural and stability requirements for adoption by the MSC but adopts no instruments itself.
