Sea Traffic Management (STM)

E3. Technology, digitalization and smart shipping

Definition

EU concept of route exchange among ships and shore.

Sea Traffic Management is a European concept and EU-funded program for exchanging route and voyage information among ships and shore services to improve coordination, port-call efficiency, and safety. Ships share planned routes in RTZ format (IEC 61174) with VTS centers and other vessels, enabling route optimization, port collaborative decision-making, and enhanced monitoring. The STM Validation Project (2015 to 2018), co-funded by the EU under CEF, tested it on roughly 300 vessels. It feeds the IMO e-navigation framework.
