Route Exchange Format (RTZ)

E3. Technology, digitalization and smart shipping

Definition

IEC 61174-compliant interoperable route format.

RTZ is the standardized XML route-exchange file format defined in IEC 61174, the ECDIS performance test standard, letting a planned route move between ECDIS units, planning software, and shore systems without re-keying. An RTZ file lists waypoints with position, leg geometry (rhumb line or great circle), turn radius, planned speed, and schedule. It underpins ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore route sharing in Sea Traffic Management and the IMO e-navigation framework. The current edition is IEC 61174:2015.
