STM (Sea Traffic Management)
E3. Technology, digitalization and smart shippingDefinition
EU-funded interoperability program.
STM is the abbreviation for Sea Traffic Management, the European route-and-voyage information-sharing concept that lets ships exchange planned routes with each other and with shore services to coordinate traffic and port calls. Routes pass in the IEC 61174 RTZ format. The EU co-funded the STM Validation Project (2015 to 2018) under the Connecting Europe Facility, trialing ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore exchange, port collaborative decision-making, and enhanced monitoring on roughly 300 vessels. STM concepts feed the IMO e-navigation strategy.
