Chief administrative officer of IMO, elected by Council and approved by Assembly.

The Secretary-General is the chief administrative officer of the IMO, appointed by the Council with Assembly approval for a renewable four-year term, and heads the Secretariat. The office directs the organization’s day-to-day work and represents it externally. Arsenio Dominguez of Panama took office on 1 January 2024, succeeding Kitack Lim of the Republic of Korea.
