Ship Recycling Yard

A ship recycling yard is the facility where end-of-life ships are dismantled and their steel, equipment, and materials recovered, principally in South Asia (Alang in India, Chattogram in Bangladesh, Gadani in Pakistan) and Turkey. The Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009, entered force 26 June 2025; it requires yards to hold a Document of Authorization (DASR), work to an approved Ship Recycling Facility Plan, and dismantle ships against the vessel’s Inventory of Hazardous Materials. The EU Ship Recycling Regulation (1257/2013) maintains its own approved-yard list.
