Titanic, RMS
F1. Maritime HistoryDefinition
White Star liner that sank on 15 April 1912 with 1,517 deaths.
RMS Titanic was a White Star Line passenger liner that struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic on the night of 14 to 15 April 1912 on her maiden voyage and sank, killing about 1,500 of the roughly 2,200 aboard. The shortage of lifeboats and the scale of the loss prompted the first International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea in 1914 and the founding of the International Ice Patrol. The wreck was located in 1985 at about 3,800 meters and is a protected site under the 2001 UNESCO Convention framework.
