Transit shed

A transit shed is a covered store on the quay apron for cargo passing quickly between ship and inland transport, distinct from a long-term warehouse in that it holds break-bulk and general cargo only for the days around the call. It sits within the reach of the quay cranes so cargo moves under cover straight off the hook, with wide doors, a clear span for forklifts, and a floor designed for stacked palletized or bagged loads. The shed serves multipurpose and break-bulk berths; containerization moved most quay storage to open stacked yards, so the transit shed is now most common at general-cargo, project-cargo, and some bulk terminals. Floor loading and door clearances set its civil design.
