Dutch marine painters, the Elder and the Younger.

Willem van de Velde the Elder (1611 to 1693) and his son Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633 to 1707), Dutch marine painters of the Golden Age. The Elder drew detailed pen-and-ink ship portraits (penschilderij) and sailed with the Dutch fleet to record battles; the Younger painted shipping in oils with exact rigging and atmosphere. Both moved to England around 1672 to work for Charles II. A representative work is the Younger’s ‘The Cannon Shot’ (around 1680, Rijksmuseum).
