English Romantic painter celebrated for seascapes including The Fighting Temeraire.

Joseph Mallord William Turner, English Romantic painter, 1775 to 1851, the foremost British marine and landscape artist, called ’the painter of light’. His sea pictures include ‘The Fighting Temeraire’ (1839, National Gallery, London), showing the veteran warship towed to be broken up, and ‘Snow Storm: Steam-Boat off a Harbour’s Mouth’ (1842) and ‘The Slave Ship’ (1840). He left his finished works and sketchbooks to the nation as the Turner Bequest in 1851.
