Vetting

C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical management

Definition

Charterer inspection of vessel before fixture.

Charterer or terminal inspection of a tanker, gas, or chemical ship before it is accepted for a fixture, to confirm it meets the oil major’s or operator’s safety standard. In the wet trades vetting runs on the OCIMF SIRE programme (now SIRE 2.0) for oil and gas tankers and the CDI scheme for chemicals; a poor inspection report can bar a ship from a charterer’s approved list. Vetting sits alongside Port State Control and class survey as a third inspection regime that gates commercial employment.
