Definition

International Code of Signals letter V, meaning "I require assistance."

Letter V of the International Code of Signals means “I require assistance.” Victor is white with a red diagonal cross (a red saltire on white). A vessel hoists it singly to ask nearby ships or shore for help that falls short of a full GMDSS distress, for example a tow, fuel, or mechanical aid. It is distinct from Whiskey, which requests medical assistance specifically, and from the formal distress signals.
