Whitbread Round the World Race

The Whitbread Round the World Race was the original crewed round-the-world yacht race, first run in 1973 to 1974 and sponsored by the Whitbread brewery. Sailed in stages with port stopovers, it followed the Southern Ocean clipper route in early editions. It was renamed the Volvo Ocean Race when Volvo took title sponsorship for the 2001 to 2002 edition, and became The Ocean Race from 2019. It established crewed offshore round-the-world racing.
