Keelboat
F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and SportDefinition
Vessel with a fixed ballast keel rather than centerboard.
A keelboat carries fixed ballast in a keel below the hull rather than a retractable centerboard, so it cannot capsize the way a dinghy can and rights itself from a knockdown. The ballast lowers the center of gravity and supplies the righting moment that lets the boat carry sail upwind. Keelboats range from small one-design racers such as the Dragon and Etchells up to offshore cruiser-racers, and the type is the basis of most rated offshore racing under IRC and ORC.
