Wing Foil Racing

F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and Sport

Definition

Emerging discipline within sailing.

Wing foil racing is a sailing discipline in which the rider holds a handheld inflatable wing for power and stands on a hydrofoil board that lifts clear of the water above a threshold speed, reducing drag for high speeds in light wind. It grew rapidly from about 2019 and World Sailing has worked to standardize equipment and rules for racing. Wing foiling is not yet an Olympic class; the Olympic foiling board event is the iQFoil windsurfer, and Formula Kite covers kiteboarding.
