Kite Sailing
F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and SportDefinition
Foiling and traction kite events including the new Olympic kiteboarding class.
Kite sailing (kiteboarding) is the use of a large steerable traction kite to power a rider on a board across the water, in racing on a hydrofoil board. Formula Kite is the equipment chosen for the Olympic kiteboarding events introduced at Paris 2024, with separate men’s and women’s competitions, replacing earlier windsurfing-only board events. World Sailing governs the discipline and recognizes the Formula Kite class. Foiling kiteboards reach speeds well above the wind speed on optimal angles.
