WinGD X-DF Engine
D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuelsDefinition
Two-stroke dual-fuel engine running on LNG with pilot fuel.
The WinGD X-DF engine is a two-stroke, low-pressure dual-fuel marine engine from Winterthur Gas & Diesel that runs on LNG using the lean-burn Otto cycle, with a small liquid pilot injection igniting a premixed air-gas charge. Gas enters at roughly 16 bar through ports in the cylinder liner, far below the 300 bar high-pressure injection of MAN ME-GI, which avoids a high-pressure gas train. The X-DF meets IMO Tier III NOx limits in MARPOL Annex VI Reg.13 without SCR or EGR. It dominates LNG carrier newbuilds; methane slip is the trade-off, addressed by WinGD’s iCER recirculation system.
