Yara Birkeland

D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuels

Definition

Pioneering autonomous battery-electric container ship.

The Yara Birkeland is a battery-electric containership built for fertilizer maker Yara to move product between Norwegian sites, entering operation in 2022 as one of the first commercial zero-emission and crewless-capable cargo ships. With around a 7 MWh battery it replaces diesel truck trips along a short coastal route, the kind of fixed, short-haul duty where battery-electric propulsion is viable today. It is cited as a proof of concept for autonomy and electrification rather than a template for deep-sea trades.
