Battery-Hybrid Vessel

D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuels

Definition

Vessel combining engines with battery systems.

A battery-hybrid vessel combines combustion engines or fuel cells with a battery bank, using the battery for peak shaving, spinning reserve, and zero-emission maneuvering in port while the engines run at their efficient load point. Hybridization cuts fuel burn and emissions on duty cycles with variable load, such as ferries, tugs, and offshore support vessels, and lets a ship draw on shore power and run quiet in sensitive areas. Pure battery-electric operation remains range-limited to short routes.
