Yard Apprenticeship
F3. Seafaring Life, Education, Professions and InstitutionsDefinition
Shipyard trades training pathway.
A structured training pathway in shipyard trades, plating, welding, fitting, shipwrighting, and machining, in which an apprentice learns a craft over several years through supervised work and classroom instruction. Distinct from seagoing cadet schemes, yard apprenticeships build the skilled workforce for shipbuilding and repair; major British and US yards ran formal indentured programs for centuries, and modern equivalents follow national vocational-qualification or registered-apprenticeship frameworks.
