Zwolle Hanseatic Heritage

The medieval trading legacy of Zwolle, capital of Overijssel in the Netherlands, granted city rights in 1230 and a member of the Hanseatic League’s city network from 1356. Sited on a tributary of the IJssel, which linked the Zuiderzee to the Rhine, Zwolle grew wealthy in the 15th century trading grain, fish, salt, and cloth across the North and Baltic seas. Surviving Hanse-era fabric includes the Sassenpoort city gate (built around 1409); Zwolle is one of nine Dutch IJssel-river Hanseatic towns.
