J Class
F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and SportDefinition
Universal Rule yachts of the America's Cup era 1930 to 1937.
The J Class yachts were the Universal Rule sloops that raced for the America’s Cup from 1930 to 1937, single-masted giants of about 120 feet sailed by professional crews for owners such as Sopwith and Vanderbilt. Only ten were ever built and three survived; from the 2000s the class revived through restorations and new builds to original lines such as Ranger and Hanuman, racing today under a class association. Endeavour, Sopwith’s 1934 challenger, is the best-known survivor.
