Definition

Regulations for the Prevention of Pollution by Oil.

MARPOL Annex I governs prevention of pollution by oil from machinery spaces and cargo operations. It sets discharge criteria (the 15 ppm bilge limit and the cargo-oil instantaneous-rate limits), requires the Oil Record Book Parts I and II, segregated ballast and double-hull arrangements, the IOPP Certificate, and the SOPEP. It entered into force on 2 October 1983 and applies to oil tankers and to other ships of 400 GT and above.
