Size taxonomy of dry-bulk carriers.

Dry-bulk carriers are grouped by deadweight into a size taxonomy set by trade routes and waterway limits: Handysize to about 40,000 DWT, Handymax and Supramax to about 60,000, Ultramax to about 65,000, Panamax 60,000 to 80,000, Kamsarmax 80,000 to 85,000 (the Port Kamsar bauxite limit), Post-Panamax above that, Capesize above roughly 150,000 (too large for Suez or Panama traditionally), Newcastlemax around 185,000 to 210,000 (the Port of Newcastle coal limit), and the iron-ore VLOC and Chinamax classes of 200,000 to 400,000 DWT. The smaller geared sizes self-discharge; the larger gearless sizes serve dedicated terminals.
