Kamsarmax

B5. Ship Types and Individual Vessels

Definition

80,000-85,000 DWT bulker.

A Kamsarmax is a dry-bulk carrier of about 80,000 to 85,000 dwt, the largest that can berth at Port Kamsar in Guinea, the major bauxite-export terminal that gives the class its name. The defining constraint is a length overall of 229 meters set by the Kamsar loading jetty, with beam held at the 32.3 meter Panamax limit, so a Kamsarmax carries more deadweight than a traditional Panamax (about 76,000 dwt) on a similar draft. The class is a workhorse of the grain, coal, and bauxite trades and competes with the geared Supramax and Ultramax in the handy-to-Panamax band. Most are gearless.
