Cargo Surveyor
F3. Seafaring Life, Education, Professions and InstitutionsDefinition
Independent inspector of loaded or discharged cargo.
A cargo surveyor is an independent inspector who certifies the condition, quantity, and stowage of cargo at loading or discharge, producing the survey reports that underpin bills of lading, claims, and disputes. The role spans draught surveys for bulk cargo, ullage and temperature checks for liquids, and condition surveys for project and general cargo. The surveyor’s findings are key evidence in cargo-claim litigation under the Hague-Visby Rules.
