Continuous machinery survey, alternative class survey regime.
Continuous Machinery Survey, a class survey regime that spreads the five-yearly machinery survey across the period by opening up and crediting items in rotation, often on a chief-engineer survey arrangement, instead of a single special-survey docking. It lets the ship maintain class without taking all machinery out of service at once, provided the planned maintenance system records support each credited item. CMS is the machinery counterpart to the hull continuous survey.
