CO2 Equivalent

A3. Marine environmental legislation: MARPOL and its annexes

Definition

Used in well-to-wake GHG intensity calculation under MARPOL Annex VI Chapter 5.

CO2-equivalent is the common unit that combines several greenhouse gases by weighting each by its global warming potential, so methane and N2O are expressed as the mass of CO2 with the same 100-year climate effect. Using AR5 GWP100 factors (CH4 at 28, N2O at 265), well-to-wake intensity under FuelEU Maritime and the proposed IMO GFI is stated in grams of CO2-equivalent per megajoule. The EU ETS extends from CO2 alone to CO2-equivalent for shipping from 2026 as methane and N2O enter scope.
