Digital Twin (Ship)

E3. Technology, digitalization and smart shipping

Definition

Live model mirroring vessel state for analytics.

A ship digital twin is a live software model of a vessel or a system aboard it, fed by sensor data so the model mirrors the real asset’s state for analysis, prediction, and what-if testing. Applications run from hull-stress and machinery health monitoring to trim and voyage optimization and to virtual commissioning of new systems. Its value depends on the quality and standardization of the underlying sensor data, which is why ISO 19847 and 19848 for onboard data servers and machinery data matter.
